Water is one of two elements that can interact with all of the physical senses and it is less material (and thus superior) to earth because it possesses more motion and activity than earth.

Water is accorded cleansing power. It is symbolic of dreaming, healing, flowing, fluidity, purification, regeneration, stability, strength, change, fertility, devotion, receiving, and unconditional love.
